Earwax, also known as cerumen, is a natural secretion in the ear that serves several important purposes. It helps protect the skin of the ear canal, helps to clean and lubricate, and provides a barrier against bacteria, fungi, dust, and water.

The ear canal has a built-in self-cleaning mechanism. The skin lining the canal naturally migrates from the center of the eardrum toward the outer ear. This process moves the earwax, along with any trapped debris, safely out of the ear.

How much wax we produce depends on things like:

  • Your age
  • What you eat
  • Your general lifestyle
  • Your genetics
  • Your ethnicity

Also, a build up of earwax might actually cause pain or h earing issues if it becomes compacted.

Things that cause the build up of wax include:

  • Cotton buds used to clean your ears
  • All types of “in-ear” headphones
  • Ear plugs
  • General dry skin
  • Also narrow ear canals

Here at Wilmslow Hearing Centre we provide highly effective professional treatments for earwax removal. For those who can’t make it to the centre, we also offer the convenience of treatment in the comfort of your own home.
