Tinnitus

What causes tinnitus?

There are various theories about the causes and origin of tinnitus. It is widely believed to result from damage to the hair cells in the cochlea (inner ear).

Within the cochlea, both inner and outer hair cells play a crucial role in hearing by transmitting sound signals to the brain for processing. The outer hair cells, being more exposed, are particularly vulnerable to damage.

When this occurs, they become less effective at regulating the activity of the inner hair cells, which may then spontaneously send sound signals to the brain—even in the absence of external sound.

As the hearing system amplifies these signals, the brain perceives the ‘ringing’ sensation we “hear”. This phenomenon originates in the brain rather than the ear itself.

Tinnitus can be associated with:

  • Hearing loss
  • Exposure to loud noise
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Ear wax build up
  • Ear infections

Currently there is no known cure for it, but there are treatments and help available to better understand the condition and provide relief. At Wilmslow Hearing Centre, we provide an in-depth hearing and tinnitus assessments to determine if any hearing loss is present, and then discuss the options regarding hearing correction and tinnitus relief. Trained by The British Tinnitus Association on a range of management techniques we offer only professional advice.

Clare is an accredited advisor with the British Tinnitus Association (BTA) and runs regular clinics. Wilmslow Hearing Centre is a corporate member of the BTA, (https://www.tinnitus.org.uk).

We know that the “ringing in our ears” can sometimes mask an underlying hearing loss. If there is some hearing loss, and hearing aids are prescribed, they may help reduce, or even eliminate in some cases, the ringing sound altogether.

One of our audiologists will do an in-depth hearing and tinnitus assessment to see if any hearing loss is present and whether hearing technology can help. We also offer other potential solutions, including a range of therapies and accessories. We can also refer you to a specialist CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) counsellor if required.

Treatment package at our centre comprises:

  • 90 minute full diagnostic tinnitus and hearing assessment (£95), including ear examination with our video-otoscope camera.
  • Professional counselling and impartial advice on management techniques and treatments, including noise generators, hearing aids and other solutions.
